I did it and met my fiancee, who’s the greatest. But I tell some people to try it when they complain about being single, and they look at me like I’m crazy… a "Do you think I’m that desperate?" look.

I dated in the "real" world for 6 years, and I had mixed success at best. There were ups and downs online too, but generally, the people I met off there wanted to be in a relationship, whereas some of people I met before just wanted to get free dinners or hook up short term.

So why is going online a sign of desperation? It seems to me it’s just another form of matchmaking, which has been around for thousands of years.
