What should I expect from a 2 year old lab?

February 26th, 2010 by admin | Posted in Adult Dating Sites

Well, my friend has a 2 year old lab who is "very sweet, loves kids, is up to date on shots, and is house broken". She has to get rid of him because she has developed a dog allergy, and she knows I’ve wanted a dog for a while, so she is offering him to me for free! My only qualm is I am not at the point right now to handle a super hyper-active puppy. I would prefer a more mellow, more "adult" dog. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to take it out to the park, swimming, on walks, etc. I also live in an apartment, and so I’m wondering will daily romps in the park be enough for a lab, or will he wind up hating life if I don’t have a yard for him to run around in? I don’t want to torture the poor guy! (By daily trips to the park I mean I get off work at 2:30pm, and I go to the park after that so I already spend the whole afternoon/evening at the park).

So, my question is would a 2 year old typically be old enough to be more mellow, or is it still going to run around eating everything in site? And could he handle apartment living given the amount of time I would take him to the park?

Thanks for the advice!

They should know the basics such as sit, lay down, wait, and paw. They like to play alot and are very strong. They are fast learners so if they dont know the basic tricks get a little cheat book on how to use your hands to show them what each hand movments means and if its a playfull dog, just use a ball and it should pick it up easily. If i were you, i would take the dog regarless, they are lovely, i have one of my own whos just turned 3.

It all depends on the disposition of the dog, my black lab would be satisfied sleeping all day and pretty much did at that age. My yellow lab – forget it!

If this person is your friend, you should know how he behaves. If you don’t think you can provide this dog a good home – then don’t. If you think that you can make daily trips to the park for plenty of exercise, then get him.

Depends on how well trained he is now, how energetic he is and if he’s neutered or not.

By 2 yrs old they start to mellow out a little, but still very active. However, I would be more concerned about his obedience training then anything else.

If dogs get enough exercise during the day they won’t be hyper-active afterward. They’ll be tired.

If you’ll obedience train the dog he’ll also be less hyper.

A good Obedience DVD is on:
